My Why
Hi! I’m Liz Billies and thanks so much for visiting my site, the Divorce Lawyer Life! For the last ten years, I have been working as a family law attorney in suburban Philadelphia. Over the years, I’ve represented hundreds of husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, and grandparents from various backgrounds.
In doing so I’ve learned a few (okay, maybe more than a few) things about navigating the divorce process, handling personal finances and living life post-divorce (a/k/a your new normal). And now I want to share that information with you!
Not a day goes by where a client doesn’t ask me about something they read on the “internet.” Most of the time the information is flat out wrong! This is really concerning to me. What if they hadn’t asked or, worse, what if they had no one to ask? Does this sounds like you?
So I thought I’d start the Divorce Lawyer Life to share my knowledge with you and dispel the rumors about the divorce process. This blog is for anyone that has been through a divorce, thinking about divorce, or is in the process of a divorce.
Before we get started, I wanted to answer some questions that you may have about me and the Divorce Lawyer Life.
Here we go . . . .
What will I get at the Divorce Lawyer Life?
This blog is for anyone that has been through a divorce, thinking about divorce, or is in the process of a divorce. Here is what you’ll get:
- Practical advice about how you can successfully navigate the divorce process to save money, protect your children and avoid confusion;
- Detailed explanations of how divorce affects your finances (and what you can do about it);
- What it’s like being a divorce lawyer (crazy stories and all!); and
- Some really lame jokes.
What’s your background?
I attended college at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Go Badgers! In 2002, I moved to Philadelphia to attend Villanova University School of Law and never left. During law school, I began working for a legal aid clinic representing parties in child support and child custody matters. It was during that experience that I realized that I had a passion for family law.
After graduation, I clerked for a family court judge for two years. There, I saw the good and not so good sides of the family court system. After that clerkship, I worked briefly in the area of insurance defense. I quickly realized that it wasn’t for me and that I needed to be practicing family law. A year later, I joined my present firm and never looked back. Now, ten years later, I am exclusively practicing divorce law and am one of two female partners at my firm.
Why should I listen to you?
So why should you listen to me? In addition to the Divorce Lawyer Life, I regularly speak and write about family law issues. I have also received numerous awards from professional organizations for my work as a family law attorney. I want to use my expertise to help YOU!

Do you have a life outside the law?
I firmly believe that the only way to stay sane in this business is to have a good personal life. In my spare time, you can find me spoiling my canine companions, Atticus and Annabelle (see below) and dreaming of opening a farm for shelter animals.
I also enjoy riding my Peloton and watching the Bachelor (and Bachelorette) to blow off steam. I should meditate more and read Us Weekly less but I’m working on that.
On my way to work, I listen to a ton of podcasts especially ones about true crime, blogging and personal finance.
I’m a huge sports nut! Are you? In the Fall, you will find me cheering on my favorite sports teams, the Wisconsin Badgers and Green Bay Packers (sorry Eagles fans!).
