It takes a lot of things to get me through the day. I’m sure you can relate. I’m always looking for new recommendations from clients, friends, and other lawyers for every aspect of my life.

Recommendations for living your post divorce life

Are you looking to add something new to your life? Are you heading back into the workforce and feel a little lost?

While I discuss some of these resources in my blog posts and on my Pinterest page, I thought it would be helpful to have them all on one page so you can refer back to it as needed. This way you won’t have to remember exactly which article you found it in. Here I’ll let you know about my:

  • Work wear recommendations;
  • What I’m eating and drinking;
  • Bedtime reading;
  • Other blogs/websites I recommend;
  • Commuting lifesavers; and
  • Travel Essentials.

Work Wear Recommendations

Shoes

Every busy working woman needs a good pair of comfortable heels. My favorite are Sam Edelman Hazel Pointy Toe Pumps. They come in 12 colors! I have at least 5 pair. I’m not kidding.

I also love Sole Society’s footwear. They are not too expensive and super comfortable. I have both boots and sandals from them and I’ve never been disappointed.

Sheath Dresses

I’m not a huge fan of suits. Sheath dresses are my go to work wear, particularly for the warmer months. A favorite brand of mine is Vince Camuto. The quality is great and most styles come in regular and petite sizes. I usually pair my dress with the a blazer and fun pair of heels. Here is one of my favorites.

Madewell Cardigans

I hate wearing blazers when I am in the office all day. I just find them annoying to wear while I’m typing. So I wear cardigans. A lot. My favorite is the Madwell Kent Cardigan. I have it in four colors. It is great to pair with trousers for the workweek or jeans on the weekends. I also love that it comes in regular and petite sizes.

Stitch Fix

I’m always on the look out for new outfits to wear to the office and to court. However, I feel like I keep buying the same thing. See my obsession with cardigans discussed above. Stitch fix is a great way to try new clothes that you may not otherwise pick out for yourself. You can also get outwear, jewelry, purses and shoes!

After you complete the style quiz, your stylist will send you five items based on your profile. You can even direct them to your Instagram and Pinterest so they can get an idea of what you like and what you are looking for them to send. I found that my fixes got way better after I gave them my Pinterest info. Try the clothes on and send back what you don’t want. If you keep all five items you get a discount. You can do it monthly or just when you need a wardrobe update. Use my promo code to get $25.00 off your first order.

Thredup

Thredup is a thrift store on steroids. You can both buy and sell used clothes on this site. However, I do find it hard to browse unless you are really specific in what you want because they have so much inventory. I have gotten a few work pieces from here for really cheap. It’s a great option for young women just starting to build their work wardrobe. You really can get anything in any size.

It is a lot easier to sell clothes on thredup than on Ebay or Poshmark. You just request a shipping label, put the items in a box, and send it in for inspection. They will then either list your clothes on consignment or just buy the clothes outright for a lower amount. You don’t get a lot of money for the items but again, it is a lot less work and it is certainly better than nothing! They also have a donation option which I have done as well.

Poshmark

Poshmark is another site for getting great deals on slightly used clothes. Again, there are a ton of options so it works best if you know exactly what you are looking for. I’ve bought and sold on this site with tremendous success. Each user has a “store” in which they photograph, list items and answer questions about their inventory. Then, prospective buyers can buy the items or negotiate a lower price.

The seller is responsible for shipping the item directly to the buyer. It can be a lot of work to keep up with your “store,” but if you have some designer or luxury items that you want to unload this is probably the best site to get the most money for them. Also, I feel more comfortable buying designer items on Poshmark than on Ebay.

What I’m Eating and Drinking

Cookbooks

I’ve really gotten into cooking in the last few years. I try to do a lot of meal prep on Sundays so I have lunches and dinners for the week. This way I don’t have to rely on takeout or the office kitchen. These are the three cookbooks that I use on a weekly if not daily basis:

Blue Apron

I’ve been ordering Blue Apron on and off for a few years. Blue Apron is a meal kit delivery service where you can get two or three meal kits sent to your house. While you still have to do the chopping and cooking, Blue Apron gives you all the ingredients you need to make the dish. I’ve only had one meal that I didn’t like. However, I stopped ordering it about a year ago because the recipes contained a lot of rice and starch, which I really try to avoid. I also found that I was substituting out a lot of other ingredients to fit my low carb life so I ended wasting a lot of food.

Fortunately, last January, Blue Apron joined forces with WW and now offer a meal package plan with six recipes per week to choose from. These recipes contain less carbs. While some of the recipes contain more carbs than I regularly eat, I can usually find two or three meals per week that fit my diet.

I don’t order Blue Apron every week because I like to make my own meals with the vegetables and meat from my CSA. I do think the price point is reasonable, particularly because I get two and sometimes three servings per recipe. I have a coupon to send up to five free meals to friends and family. If you are interested, email me at divorcelawyerlife@gmail.com and I’ll hook you up.

Winc

Winc is a home wine delivery service. You can complete a preference quiz and designate if you want red wine, white wine, or a mixture of both. They will then send you four bottles based on your preferences on a monthly basis.

What I really like is that they only work with small wineries so you are getting wine that you would not be able to get in the stores. Four bottle cost about $50-$60 so it’s super reasonable and it’s easy to skip a month. If you are a wine drinker and looking to try new brands you should really give this a try. Click here for my promo code to get two free bottles of wine. Who wouldn’t want that??

Tone It Up

I have been following Karena and Katrina, the women behind the fitness empire Tone It Up, since they only had a website. I think I have also been a member of their nutrition plan for at least 8 years. It is a one time fee and they are always sending new recipes. Money well spent! I especially love their protein pancakes and smoothie recipes. They also are always doing challenges to help people get in shape and “clean up” their diet.

I am also a huge fan of their protein powder. There are so many protein powders on the market so it was really hard for me to find a good one that didn’t taste like chalk. It comes in a few flavors. Right now, I have coconut, vanilla and chocolate in my pantry. I use it in my morning smoothies and baking. In addition to the nutrition plan, I also use their exercise app. They have both live and on demand classes. Access to the app is $90 for a year’s subscription. Way cheaper than a gym membership and a great supplement to my Peloton!

Bedtime Reading

During law school I really got away from reading for fun. This year I made a commitment to get back to reading. I have so many books I want to read! My Amazon wishlist is probably 100 books long. I just finished reading Night Film by Marisha Pessl and now I’m reading Nature Girl by Carl Hiassen. I’ve read many of his books and they are always a fun read.

If you are looking for a good laugh, I am in love with all things Jen Lancaster. I read her first book, Bitter is the New Black, years ago. She has written a ton of books since then and I’ve loved all of them. She does fiction and non-fiction but the non-fiction are my favorite. She’s also a midwesterner with a soft spot for rescue animals so I think we’d get along.

If you are looking to learn something, next up for me is Ruth Soukup’s Do It Scared. I recently started listening to her Do It Scared Podcast and its really been teaching me to go outside my comfort zone and embrace the fear. I think a lot of people going through divorce could learn something from this too. I’ll do a post about my thoughts once I’ve finished.

Here are some other books I have enjoyed recently:
